The Anonymity of the Net

On the Minnesota Trout Unlimited forum there has been quite a bit of a kerfuffle. There was tensions over Bait/Flies/Regs/HI etc.

Often when I go to the Star Tribune or Pioneer Press websites I read the articles and then glance at the comments and it is a war between Liberal/Conservative talking points. People call each other names, question patriotism, etc. Sometimes it devolves into homophobia, xenophobia, racism, elitism, classicism, "I hate your goddamn dog...."

There seems to be a certain level of comfort with saying stuff to someone you've never met, never seen.

I fly fish. I occasionally throw jigs for skittish smallies in low water. But, mostly I fly fish.

Contacting employers in an attempt to settle scores over bait/flies debates is silly. Getting into these stupid arguments is even sillier.

We may as well scream at each other over abortion, gay marriage, gun rights or whatever. No one is going to change there mind.

I dunno. Seems like we can't get anywhere with each other.

  1. Kia ora,
Came across your place some how or other, but glad I did. I grew up in Wisconsin, and lived in the Cities for about 8 years until ending up here in New Zealand. After 16 years of tramping in the mountains with the clear rivers, and taking a few mates from the states in there to chase trout I finally am starting to do a bit of chasing myself.
It seems a shame that with so much to find uncommon in our belefs in politics, religion, guns, ect. that fishing would be a cause to grow farther apart.
    Cheers,
    Robb

  2. Wow. I've been dreaming of big New Zealand trout for a couple of decades. Though, over the past fifteen years SW Wisconsin has become a formidable trouting location--I don't travel West any longer for trout fishing, it's so good here. That and the new thing is fly fishing for the big muskies on norther WI rivers.

    Good to hear from you!

  3. Nice blog and solid commentary. I actually think that there is more common ground than separate. No one wants worse fishing, people just have different ideas about how to get there. Well, and there is a very loud population that seems to live in the past...
